Calista

I bit into this still-warm chocolate that my candied apple had been dipped in. My eyes floated over the storefront windows as Quill and I meandered through the small mountain town about an hour away from home. That morning, we had reluctantly woken, took our time getting ready, had some breakfast, and then headed out. We would have loved to stay at the cabin all day, but it would be an easier transition back home if we did it slowly. We drove to a small town that both of us had seen before but never had a chance to stop in. It was geared toward out-of-town visitors, but I liked it. It made me feel like we were years away from reality.

As we walked past a small gallery, I stopped and looked over a beautiful painting in the window. Quill walked up next to me and tilted his head to the side. "It's pretty, but I've seen you do prettier."

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. "You have to say that because you're my husband. It amazes me the talent that some people have. Sometimes I think that if I had the patience, I could do something like this. Paint something with ornate detail, but my mind is always going in ten different directions."

Quill shrugged. "It's beautiful, but so are yours. Everyone has their own style, and you can't compare yourself to someone else. All you have to do is be authentic to you, and your talent will shine too."

I glanced over at Quill. "I think I found a job for you."

"What's that?"

I smirked. "You can be a motivational speaker. You know, hold conventions, and motivate people to be the best versions of themselves. All you need is a brightly colored suit, some matching shoes, and a hastily worded book for people to buy."

Quill tilted his head back and laughed, holding his hand over his ribs, trying to keep them stabilized. "I can't even motivate myself, much less others. I could say these things to you because I love you. In general, I don't really like other people."

I giggled, shaking my head as we turned and continued walking. "I don't think that's true. You just don't like being the center of attention. And you don't necessarily want to be responsible for motivating other people. But, from your job, I'm pretty sure that shows all on its own that you care about other people."

Quill gave me a side-eye and scrunched his nose. "I guess you're right. So, I was thinking about this before I even got back. Why don't you enroll back in college and finish your art degree? I mean, even if you decide not to do anything with it, you'll get to draw and paint, learn all the things you say you don't know, and you'll have a degree for the future."

I was surprised to hear him say that, not because he held me back from anything, but because it meant putting a bit of responsibility on his shoulders when it came to taking care of Ella.
